Growing up isn't always easy and it's a time when some teenagers make mistakes in their lives. A few teenagers will continue down the wrong path for the rest of their lives, while others work to get themselves back on the straight and narrow to have a better future.
Brianna Maitland
Brianna Maitland had a rough start to adulthood. She was only 17-years-old when she decided to move out of her mom's Vermont home to start life on her own. She had dropped out of high school and worked two jobs as a waitress and dishwasher to make ends meet. She shared a home with her close friend, Jillian, since she couldn't afford to live independently.
However, Brianna realized dropping out of school wasn't the best decision and decided she needed to get her life back on track. She successfully obtained her GED and planned on attending community college in the Fall so she could start working towards her degree.
On March 19, 2004, Brianna's mom, Kellie, took her out shopping in St. Albans, Vermont, as a way to celebrate her accomplishment. As much as Brianna enjoyed shopping, she was anxious to get home so she could start her shift as a dishwasher that evening at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery.
That Evening's Shift
Brianna worked her usual shift at the Black Lantern Inn, and everything appeared to be normal to her co-workers. She didn't have any visitors that evening, nor did she receive any calls. No one saw Brianna call anyone either. Her shift was uneventful.
When Briana's shift ended at 11:20 p.m., her co-workers invited her to stay after work for a late-night dinner. She kindly declined the invitation as she had to work an early morning shift at her other place of employment the next morning. A fellow co-worker saw her get into her car and leave the parking lot.
