A night out with friends is a time to look forward to and a moment to enjoy. It’s a chance to blow off some steam and shred the stress so many of us deal with during our normal day-to-day lives. However, a night out shouldn’t lead to a police investigation.
Brian Shaffer
Brian Shaffer was a 27-year-old second-year medical student at Ohio State University with a bright future ahead of him. He had a beautiful girlfriend by the name of Alexis Waggoner, who was also a second-year medical student.
Besides becoming a doctor, Brian had always dreamed of being in a rock band. He was a massive fan of Pearl Jam and even had the band’s logo tattooed on his arm. He would have loved to live that lifestyle but chose something a bit more calm.
April 1, 2006
In the early morning hours of April 1, 2006, Brian was spending a night out on the town with his roommate, William “Clint” Florance. It was the beginning of spring break, and Brian had been dealing with quite a bit of stress. Besides school, his mother had just passed away from bone cancer three weeks earlier.
Spring break was going to give Brian some time to relax and enjoy some time with the people he loved most in his life. In just a few days, he planned to leave for a trip to Miami with Alexis, where friends and family had expected him to propose marriage to her. Before Brian left to spend the evening with Clint, he called Alexis and confirmed their trip as she was headed to visit her parents in Toledo.
Brian and Clint hung out at Columbus’ University District bars. They started at the Ugly Tuna Saloona before heading over to the Arena District and Short North, where they met up with Clint’s friend Meredith Reed. The three of them then decided to go back to the Ugly Tuna Saloona, so Meredith drove them back to the bar.
