When Your Writing Conflicts with Your Personal Views

When I began writing I wanted to make a difference. I am a High School English teacher by profession, but educationally my background is in psychology with an emphasis on criminal justice. I intended to study the science of crime. I wanted to understand what made a human being kill another human being and I wanted to get killers off the streets. However, life took a turn and I became a teacher. It’s not a decision I regret. I absolutely love my job, but writing allows me to explore the passion I walked away from.

Most of my articles focus on unsolved murders. Cold cases. I want to help the victims and their families find the justice they so deserve and put their murderers behind bars. However, I recently came across a cold case in my research that stopped me in my tracks. I discovered that the victim may have been a member of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). At that point, I just didn’t know if I could write about this man and have been perplexed by the idea ever since I came across his case.

My Personal Beliefs

I grew up in the melting pot of Southern California. I was raised in a diverse community. I consider myself blessed that I have so many friends and family members of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. I’m grateful for my experiences and that I get to be exposed to so…
